In this world...not of it
Christians hear & say that often but is it really easy to be in this world & not of it? For me, it varies. Sometimes it seems effortless & other times it feels like I'm failing miserably at it. The following devotion by Dr. David Jeremiah speaks to this. I hope it blesses you.
Uncomfortable with the Culture
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

It's happened more than once—missionaries leave the United States and, in time, become more comfortable in a foreign land than in their native country. They give various reasons: "It's quieter," "less materialism," "less peer pressure on our children," "the people are more receptive to the Gospel." When they return to America to visit, they talk about "returning home" in a new way—they've exchanged their old home for a new one.
That's what it means to be a citizen of the kingdom of God. Paul says our "citizenship is in heaven," not in this world (Philippians 3:20). It's why, over time, Christians begin to feel more and more out of place with the cultures of this world; why they speak of God's eternal kingdom as "going home." When we exchange our earthly home for our kingdom home is up to God. In the interim, our job is to so walk in the Spirit that we aren't "conformed to this world"; that we aren't squeezed into the world's mold, as Bible translator J. B. Phillips put it. When you leave home today, let it remind you of where your true home is—in Christ Jesus, now and for eternity.

Romantical fingerprints...
Don't know if there is such a thing but that's what we're calling our very short get away. This afternoon we will leave Phoebe with good friends of ours & head to Louisville. Our refingerprinting appt. is for 8am ET tomorrow which is 7am here & we did not want to get up at 3am to get there in time so we decided to leave today & spend the night by ourselves to celebrate our wedding anniversary one week early since we won't have the oppportunity to get away next Tuesday. We haven't had a night by ourselves without children for a year & a half so we are really looking forward to this even though we have to end our trip with an intimidating trip to the DHS office to get fingerprinted :o) Please pray that my pretty significant paper cut on one of my fingers won't be cause for them to reschedule our appointment.

On my heart...
Noah continues to be on my heart & in my thoughts a lot right now which I am thanking God because I think that it's a "sign" of good things to come. Please continue to pray with me that he will come home soon. I have been praying for his birth family as well. The following is a prayer from the book "The Power of a Praying Parent" by Stormie Omartian that I am praying on the behalf of Noah & his birth family.
Dear Lord,
Your Word says, "I sought the Lord, & He heard me, & delivered me from all my fears" (Psalm 34:4). I seek You this day, believing that You hear me, & I pray that You will deliver (Noah & his birth family) from any fear that threatens to overtake (them). You said You have "not given us a spirit of fear, but of power & of love & of a sound mind" (2 Timothy 1:7). Flood (them) with Your love & wash away all fear & doubt. Give (them)a sense of Your loving presence that fars outweighs any fear that would threaten to overtake (them). Help (them)to rely on Your power in such a manner that it establishes strong confidence & faith in You. Give (them) a mind so sound that (they) can recognize any false evidence the devil presents to (them) & identify it as having no basis in reality.
Wherever there is real danger or good reason to fear, give (them) wisdom, protect (them), & draw (them) close to You. Help (them) not to deny (their) fears, but take them to You in prayer & seek deliverance from them. Diarrhea of the mouth & other topics...
Today I had the honor of driving you-you & Judah to the Louisville airport. I was glad to have this opportunity because although I had seen them twice during their stay here prior to today, I had not really had any one on one time with them. So as soon as we took off I started talking...and I didn't stop with the exception of letting you-you answer my questions & stopping for a snack, until we got to the airport. Then I continued to talk until we said our good byes at the security check point. I'm sure when I left she was shaking her head & saying to herself, "Wow...I didn't know she could talk so much!" Yes, I can! I don't always talk that much. I'm a good listener too but today I guess I felt compelled to talk non stop.
So I brought my camera so I could take some more pictures of you-you & Judah before they left...but I totally forgot about it & didn't take any :o( but I do have a couple that I took last Friday morning at prayer group.
Thank you so much you-you & Judah for coming to visit us!!! We were all blessed by your visit & look forward to seeing you again soon!!!
Spiritual Warfare...
I been in the "thick" of some major spiritual warfare lately. During times like these it is sometimes hard to remember that we're not fighting against people but against spiritual powers. Randy sent me this devotion this morning from Dr. David Jeremiah, & I must say it was perfect timing. We need to identify our "real" enemies & put on the full armour of God found in Ephesians 6:10-18.
The Real Enemy
For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

For many years, medical researchers thought that stomach ulcers were caused by stress and spicy foods. Then, in 1979, two Australian researchers rediscovered the helicobacter pylori bacterium and proved that it was the cause of stomach ulcers. In 1994, the National Institutes of Health agreed and recommended treating ulcers with antibiotics instead of milk.
In medicine, the enemy has to be identified before the proper defense can be used. And the same is true in the spiritual life. Many Christians, while believing in the devil generally, have not identified him as being the enemy of their personal life. The apostle Paul wrote that the Christian's struggle in life is against spiritual powers under the control of Satan. To fail to identify one's true enemy is to fail to defeat him. It takes spiritual defenses to defeat a spiritual enemy.
When you find yourself in a soul-sick state, make sure you identify the cause. If it is spiritual in nature, only God's spiritual remedies will cure you.

I had no idea that my friend Lara (aka: Mama Nata & Fritzon) who lives about 4 hours away was going to be at Michelle's Sunday so I was very pleasantly surprised when we pulled up the drive way & I saw her standing there. Excited about Sunday!!!
Sundays have always been my favorite day of the week even if it wasn't always for the same reasons. Now I like Sundays because I start the day by worshiping the Lord with other people who like to worship the Lord & it sets a good tone for the whole week even if I am convicted by something said in the sermon...you know that if we only heard good things about ourselves we wouldn't grow much. I also like Sundays because Randy & I decided a long time ago to try to keep them very simple & leisurely. For the most part you won't find us doing a long list of "things to do" on Sundays. We generally come home from church & just "hang out."
We are really excited about tomorrow because tomorrow afternoon we get to go to a friend's house who brought their two girls home from Haiti a week and a half ago. That's exciting enough but we also get to see another couple who just brought their two children home from Haiti this past Tuesday. And if that's not exciting enough...we get to see Angela aka: you-you & her daughter Judah!!! We are really pumped to see all of them...and of course all of the other lovely faces that will be there! :o) See you all tomorrow!

My Life Application Study Bible only footnotes one verse of this psalm which is verse 14. Sometimes our burdens seem more than we can bear, & we wonder how we can go on. David stands at this bleak instersection of life's road & meditates on the Lord, the great burden bearer. God is able to lift us up because (1) his greatness is beyond discovery(145:3), (2) he does mighty acts for each generation(145:4) (3) he is full of glorious splendor & majesty(145:5), (4) he does awe-inspiring deeds(145:5-6) (5) he is righteous(145:7), (6) he is kind, merciful, patient, loving, & compassionate(145:8-9), (7) he rules over an everlasting Kingdom(145:13), (8) he is our source of all our daily needs(145:15-16), (9) he is righteous & kind in all his dealings(145:17), (10) he remains close to those who call him(145:18), (11) he hears our cries & rescues us (145:19-20). If you are bending under a burden & feel that you are about to fall, turn to God for help. He is ready to lift you up & bear your burden.
I am curious as why they just footnoted verse 14. I think this psalm is very "meaty" & warrants more footnotes...but of course, that's just my own personal opinion.

Enough to make a proud Mama cry!
Below is an update that I recieved from the orphanage today:
Shakira has been her usual energetic and bouncy self! I think she is enjoying summertime and having her friends around to play outside with in the mornings. Sandy says that her toe is completely healed now. Praise God! Shakira always wants to be part of the action and try what the other kids are doing. Recently, she played baseball with me and got a hit! Today, she tried out puzzles with some of the kids. She has a special relationship with her night nanny, Makile, and it’s so cool to see how excited she gets when Makile arrives!
Samara is her usual cuddly and smiley self! While the medical team was here, she made a new friend Colleen's son, Tim. He took a special interest in Samara and played with her a lot during the week. She loved the extra attention! I really appreciate how Samara goes with the flow and seems to be happy with whatever we are doing at the moment. What a sweet girl!
Caleb is doing well in the nursery. He’s still working on the whole walking thing since he took his first steps during your visit. The other day I was in the nursery, and Caleb was having fun playing with Peterson. I love Caleb’s smile. He’s such a good and content boy.

A year full of wonderful memories...
A year ago today, Randy & I went to Haiti to meet Shakira, Samara, & Caleb. It's been an up and down emotional roller coaster ride ever since but it has been a year of making wonderful memories with our children & I thank God for that!

Constructive Criticism
"Let the godly strike me! It will be a kindness! If they reprove me, it is soothing medicine. Don't let me refuse it. But I am in constant prayer against the wicked & their deeds." Psalm 141:5 NLT
This is the footnote from the Life Application Study Bible:
David says that being rebuked by a godly person is a kindness. Nobody really likes criticism, but everybody can benefit from it when it is given wisely & taken humbly. David suggested how to accept criticism: (1) Don't refuse it. (2) consider it a kindness, & (3) keep quiet (don't fight back). Putting these suggestions into practice will help you control how you react to criticism, making it productive rather than destructive, no matter how it was originally intended.
I must admit that I don't like getting criticism either but sometimes it's necessary to help me get back on the right track or help me from falling off the right track. I don't like giving it either because most people don't "accept" it well even if it's meant to be constructive & helpful. I pray that we all will study this verse & let God speak to us about it.

David suggested how to accept criticism: (1) Don't refuse it. (2) consider it a kindness, & (3) keep quiet (don't fight back). Putting these suggestions into practice will help you control how you react to criticism, making it productive rather than destructive, no matter how it was originally intended.
I must admit that I don't like getting criticism either but sometimes it's necessary to help me get back on the right track or help me from falling off the right track. I don't like giving it either because most people don't "accept" it well even if it's meant to be constructive & helpful. I pray that we all will study this verse & let God speak to us about it.

Opening a can of worms...
First, I want to start this post with my personal disclaimer..."that I really dislike writing posts like these." I know this is a "hot" topic & there will be strong feelings about it from all angles. I have felt God prompting me to write about this for the past couple of weeks. I had planned on writing it...just not today. Then I got a call from a friend who asked me about this topic. I think that was God's way of prompting me to write it today :o)
Not too long ago a friend asked me what I would do if the Orphanage that I am adopting from said it was okay by their standards to give money to people to get our files worked on more quickly & thus bring our children home sooner. First I want to make it perfectly clear that the Orphanage where my children are does not do that. This was purely a hypothetical question by a person seeking an answer & reason for my answer. This was/is my answer: No, I would not! Of course, that was the easy part. The hard part was explaining my answer...not for me so much but to answer in a way that would speak to this person's heart about the things of God.
Am I perfect? Absolutely not! Am I tempted? By many things all the time! So why can I adamantly say, "No, I would not give a bribe to get my children home sooner." Because God says it's wrong. But what if it's acceptable practice in the society? Just because it's "acceptable" doesn't make it right. It doesn't make it legal either. Most society's have rules against bribes even if it's "socially accptable." So in this case, not only would I be disobeying God, I would be disobeying the government as well. But other people do it! Once again I go back to...that doesn't make it right. Remember you mother saying to you as a child..."If Susie jumped off a cliff, would you?" I wouldn't back then & I don't plan to now.
Also, if I claim to be a child of God, which I do...shouldn't I be trusting in God to finish what he has called me to do? That alone should be enough to make me not want to do it but what if it wasn't? Well, what about the consquences that come from our sins & disobeying God? What if someone gave a bribe to get their children home sooner & for their disobedience their children died or they themselves died? I don't want to take that kind of chance.
But God has called me to adopt these children & they are my responsibilty to care for them & love them so I should do whatever it takes to get them home sooner. First of all God doesn't call us to disobey his Word. Secondly, serving & loving God is my first priority...above all else...above my children. Lastly, I have been caring for & loving my children for over a year & a half but have only been with them physically in person 3 weeks of that time.
Now lets forget about us for a moment & think about what kind of impact we make on society if we gave into the temptation to give a bribe. We are hindering a society from ever getting out of the bribery/corruption cycle. We are also placing the people who accept the bribes at risk for loosing their jobs & their ability to provide for their families. We are also diminishing our witness for Jesus to the world.

Almost a month...
has gone by since I went to Haiti on June 9th. I usually post a lot of pictures & tell stories after I get back but this time I didn't. Part of me wants to keep them to myself because a "silly" part of my brain & heart think that if I share these precious memories with others that I will have "less" for myself & since I don't plan to go back again until it's time to bring our children home...I want to keep as much as possible. I know this probably doesn't make sense to anyone but me but I assure you that "I" know what I'm talking about :o)
So tonight I am letting go of this irrational fear or thought. After several delays, I arrived to the "O" at about 8pm. I had a feeling before I walked through the doors that my children would be asleep because they usually "crash" at 7pm. As I walked through the doors I was met by all the downstairs children except Shakira because she was asleep as I had suspected. I gave them hugs & kisses & said Hello to the nannies. I then walked over to Shakira's bed which is a bottom bunk stuck in the corner of the room. I leaned down & kissed her cheek & said, "Shakira...it's mama...I love you." She in turn said, "Ugh" & turned over on her other side & kept sleeping :o)
I then headed up to the nursery. Samara was asleep as well. Caleb was getting his nightime "wipe down" & his diaper changed so I went over to Samara's bed. I knelt down on the floor next to her bed & gave her a kiss & said, "Samara...it's mama...I love you." She didn't blink an eye...and kept on snoring...and boy can that girl snore! :o) I was then mobbed by the little ones that weren't in bed yet. They are all so cute! By this time Caleb was changed & looking at me intently. I don't know what he was thinking but his eyes & face looked liked he was saying, "Ugh...hey mom...what about me? You know...you're cute, adorable son who has been waiting what seems like forever to see you again...could you please come over here now?"
So I walked over to him & he reached out for me & gave me a long, curious look. At first I wasn't sure if he really recognized me but after a couple of minutes he was "attached" & he didn't want me to leave his sight. I couldn't believe how much he had grown since I saw him in December. Of course I've seen pictures of him since then but it's not the same. Now he was walking & saying "Mama & Aye!" At first he didn't smile much & I labeled him a serious thinker like his daddy but after the first day he smiled & laughed a lot for me.
I loved on him for awhile & then it was time for me to go to bed. I was exhausted & morning comes a lot earlier in Haiti than it does here even though I get up at the same time...go figure...it must be the rooster effect! :o)
Samara & Shakira were up & waiting for me the next morning. Either the nannies or the other kids must have told them that I had come in the night before. As soon as they saw me their faces were covered with a big smile...but I think my smile was bigger :o) Of course they both wanted me to pick them up at the same time which is not easy to do. Normally Samara is the one who gets held first because she lunges at you & Shakira usually just runs around you but not this time. This time Shakira lunged first...much to Samara's disappointment! After some hugs & kisses it was time to look at Shakira's foot. So I assisted Sandy with the dressing change & held Shakira's hands at the same time. I was impressed with how clean the wounds were & keeping it clean was what we focused on the whole time I was there.

I then walked over to Shakira's bed which is a bottom bunk stuck in the corner of the room. I leaned down & kissed her cheek & said, "Shakira...it's mama...I love you." She in turn said, "Ugh" & turned over on her other side & kept sleeping :o)
I then headed up to the nursery. Samara was asleep as well. Caleb was getting his nightime "wipe down" & his diaper changed so I went over to Samara's bed. I knelt down on the floor next to her bed & gave her a kiss & said, "Samara...it's mama...I love you." She didn't blink an eye...and kept on snoring...and boy can that girl snore! :o) I was then mobbed by the little ones that weren't in bed yet. They are all so cute! By this time Caleb was changed & looking at me intently. I don't know what he was thinking but his eyes & face looked liked he was saying, "Ugh...hey mom...what about me? You know...you're cute, adorable son who has been waiting what seems like forever to see you again...could you please come over here now?"
So I walked over to him & he reached out for me & gave me a long, curious look. At first I wasn't sure if he really recognized me but after a couple of minutes he was "attached" & he didn't want me to leave his sight. I couldn't believe how much he had grown since I saw him in December. Of course I've seen pictures of him since then but it's not the same. Now he was walking & saying "Mama & Aye!" At first he didn't smile much & I labeled him a serious thinker like his daddy but after the first day he smiled & laughed a lot for me.
I loved on him for awhile & then it was time for me to go to bed. I was exhausted & morning comes a lot earlier in Haiti than it does here even though I get up at the same time...go figure...it must be the rooster effect! :o)
Samara & Shakira were up & waiting for me the next morning. Either the nannies or the other kids must have told them that I had come in the night before. As soon as they saw me their faces were covered with a big smile...but I think my smile was bigger :o) Of course they both wanted me to pick them up at the same time which is not easy to do. Normally Samara is the one who gets held first because she lunges at you & Shakira usually just runs around you but not this time. This time Shakira lunged first...much to Samara's disappointment! After some hugs & kisses it was time to look at Shakira's foot. So I assisted Sandy with the dressing change & held Shakira's hands at the same time. I was impressed with how clean the wounds were & keeping it clean was what we focused on the whole time I was there.

Glasses...
I know these aren't the best pictures to show case Phoebe's new glasses that she got yesterday but she wasn't cooperating with me...which seems to be the trend this week...and it's still early in the week!...please pray for us! :o)

Soon...
I will get to re experience the joy I felt back in 2006 when my good friends Don & Teresa brought home their daughter Eva from China except this time it will be two sets of friends with 5 children from Haiti...I can't wait!!!
Sad Samara...
It's always hard on all the children at the orphanage when their parents leave to go home without them. Some children are more sensitive than others & it really seems to affect them more. Samara is one of the sensitive ones & this time my leaving really seems to have made her sad. Usually a few days after I leave she is back to herself but that doesn't seem to be the case this time. Every time I see a picture of her, she looks very sad...like she has lost her best friend. Please pray that the Holy Spirit would comfort her & speak to her heart & spirit. Please pray that she understands that we love her very much & can't wait for her to come home. Thanks!

I was reading Psalm 122 this morning & these verses & footnote really spoke to me today & I immediately thought of my good friends Angela & Michelle. I know that some of my readers know them & their situation but for those of you don't I will tell you that they are both very wonderful people. They have been in Haiti for several days waiting to get Visa appointments so they can bring their children home. They are adopting from the same orphanage as Randy & I, & they live in our area. I am asking everyone who reads this post today to please intercede fervently on their behalf today. Please pray that Steven's new passport will be finished today & they will have everything they need to have their Visa appointments & that they will get their appointments today. Please pray that their Visa appointments go well & that Michelle, Jeremy, Mia, Hope, Noah, Angela, Belle, & Steven will be on a plane to the US within the next couple of days & that they will arrive home safely. Please pray for a peace & joy that passes all human understanding to fill them all. Thanks!

Phoebe's eyes...
Please pray for complete healing for Phoebe's eyes. We went to the eye doctor Friday for her first eye doctor visit & ended up ordering her a pair of glasses. They should be in about a week. She has a pretty significant astigmastism & the doctor says she will probably have to wear glasses for the rest of her life however I'm praying & believing for healing of her eyes & that she won't have to wear them all of her life. It did not take her long to pick out a pair of glasses. The style is similar to mine & they are purple. I think she looks great in them. I'll post pictures once she gets them.

Shaki's foot...
Here are pictures of what Shakira's left foot looked like Sunday morning before I left. It is "wetter" looking than it had been because Sandy & I tried something different Saturday to help keep it cleaner but it also made it wetter which wasn't good. Michelle sent me an E mail last night saying that the skin has healed over her toe that lost the tip so that is great & I pray that the toes don't get re injured by someone stepping on them or her stubbing them before they are completely healed. Thanks for all of your prayers!

Home but very tired...
after getting to PAP airport...delays...going through passport control, customs, running through MIA airport to be delayed...once, twice...running through Chicago airport...thankfully the flight was delayed twice so I could get home last night...then I got on the plane & it was about to take off when they got word that there was a power outage at the EVV airport...are you kidding me??? Waited on the plane for about 20 more minutes & then we took off...got home at 11:45pm & went to sleep around 1am. Me & Phoebe exhausted so we decided to take the day "off" & rest :o) I'm going to try to download my pictures today & hope to post some soon.
Please keep praying for Shakira's foot. She's not out of the woods until it is completely healed. Please pray that Michelle & Angela get Visa appt's scheduled today. Thanks!

Update...
So to make a long story somewhat less long...Friday I celebrated my birthday. Saturday morning I was informed that Shakira's foot needed attention. I really wanted to go to Haiti but with the $1000 ticket price knew I couldn't go unless God blessed me with the money. By Saturday evening I had E ticket iternary in my hand...Praise God!!! I arrived in Haiti around 7pm...4 & 1/2 hrs later than scheduled but thank God I made it safely.
Shakira's foot looks "good" as far as the wound goes. They are working very hard to keep it clean until it's healed. Unfortunately the injury happened to her good foot but I am thankful that her injury isn't any worse that it is because it could have been. We're still not out of the woods yet regarding it's healing & not getting infected so I would appreciate continued prayers for that.
I have been having some very good bonding time with my children. I think they are "fully" attached to Mama & ready to come home. Caleb cries every time I leave the room & lights up like a Christmas tree when I come back. It's a good thing they are ready because we're one step closer to them coming home...
We're out of Parquet!!! Our files are being transcripted & we should be in MOI soon. Praise God!!! Please keep praying for movement for all the 3A files...it's working!!!

"The BIG 40"
I would like to thank my Lord & Saviour Jesus Christ for blessing me with 40 years of life so far. A BIG thank you to all of my friends & family who bestowed countless Happy Birthday wishes, prayers, thoughts, cards, flowers, & presents on me today!!!
This morning I was feeling very reflective & had planned to post my thoughts about today earlier but I got side tracked. Now it's 9:24pm...past my bedtime...and I'm tired so it's going to have to wait until tomorrow :o)

The sound of...
silence. We haven't heard any news regarding our adoptions for the past three weeks. We continue to pray that we will exit Parquet soon & quickly enter & exit Archives & MOI. Shakira's foot...
Please pray for healing for Shakira's foot. This is an excerpt of the report I got.
"A metal bench fell on her toes. The two toes next to the baby toe were affected. The one next to the little toe was cut deeply and the next toe lost the nail. I cleaned it & put an antibiotic cream on that I had, and secured it with a bandaid to hold it in place. The nail was almost off so I took it off completely. We are cleaning and putting cream on it and keeping a sock over the bandage to prevent infection."
For all of those of you who know Shakira...keeping a sock on it will be no easy feat! (no pun intended :o)

Momentous Occassion...
After several months of diligent practicing of tieing shoe laces with her "shoe lace practice book" she did it all by herself for the first time today. She was so excited!!! Tomorrow I'll have her try it on "real" shoes.
Renewing Vows...
I meant to post this last night but didn't get around to it. Last night was a wonderful night for me & Randy...minus a "freaky incident" at a local restaurant which I will reserve for a separate post.
Randy & I have been participating in a Couples activity called "10 Great Dates" over the past few months at the church where Phoebe went to preschool at. It has been a wonderful experience for us. For one we got to have 10 great dates with free baby sitting provided which is always a plus :o)but the book itself along with the alone time together has really reconnected us. Last night was the 10th date. Typically we would go to the church & join other couples for about 15 minutes of video time which reinforced what we were reading in our books & then we would go on a date by ourselves. Last night after the video, all the couples were invited to go into the sanctuary where the Pastor was waiting for us & we could renew our wedding vows if we wanted to.
We had renewed our vows on our 10th wedding anniversary & had planned to renew them again on our 20th. We're coming up on our 19th in August. We decided to go ahead & renew them now & I am so glad we did. It was really an awesome experience & it was great to share it with at least 10 other couples. When it was time to say my vows, my voice got really quite just like it did on our wedding day but this time tears were streaming down my face & I was very emotional. Not to say my wedding day wasn't emotional or not wonderful because it was & our renewal at our 10th wedding annivesary was very special too but this time it was different in a way I probably can't adequately put into words. Although the flame can seem to fade a bit in some marriages with the passing of time, I think in our marriage it has made it stronger. I reflect back on the years we have been together & everything we have been through...the good & the bad, the pretty & the ugly sides of marriage...and I have come to appreciate them all because they have caused us to grow deeper in our relationship with Jesus & to each other...and for that I will always be thankful. Thank you Lord for blessing me with such a wonderful husband!
